Full free transfer service.
Plate Master offers a full and free transfer service. By this, we mean we will handle the entire registration number transfer procedure and will promptly advise you as to when you can attach the actual number plates to your vehicle.
If you require this service, you will need to post us the following documents after your have made your purchase: the recipient vehicle’s registration document V5C (logbook), MOT certificate (if applicable) and the tax disk expiry date (we do not need your actual tax disk).
We will have these documents amended accordingly and typically within 7 to 10 days you will receive a new tax disc (and MOT certificate if applicable) bearing the new registration number. At such a time you can attach the plastic number plates to your vehicle. Later, a replacement registration document will follow direct from the DVLA.
Alternatively, we can supply your personalised registration on a DVLA certificate so that you can assign it when you are ready by taking or posting your documents to your local DVLA office.

Our Most Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does a transfer take?
We aim to complete the transfer as swiftly as possible. Generally, the transfer process initiates once we have received the recipient vehicle’s documents. Once received, the entire process typically takes 7 working days. Please note that if you require the registration number issued on a certificate you should receive it in about 4 working days.
- What documents will I need to provide Plate Master for the transfer of N16 HTF?
The recipient vehicle’s registration document V5C (logbook), MOT certificate (if applicable) and the tax disk expiry date (we do not need the actual tax disk, just state the expiry date on our purchase form).
- What happens to my vehicle’s current registration when I assign N16 HTF to it?
Normally it will be invalidated, unless you choose to transfer it to a retention certificate. Currently the standard DVLA charge for this is £105.00. We will also handle this transfer for you at no extra cost. Please note, not all registration numbers are eligible for transfer and in such cases would become void. See also (8) below. Please contact us if you require more information.
- What payment methods do you have?
There are five payment options (offered on our purchase page):
- Credit or debit card
- Paypal
- Transfer credit - online (BACS) or at your local branch
- By cheque or bankers draft
- Deposit cash at any Barclays bank. You can use your own bank but they may charge you.
- When do I attach the N16 HTF number plates to my vehicle?
You can attach the new plates to the vehicle the moment you receive your new tax disk and MOT certificate (if applicable). If however, you have purchased the registration number on a certificate you have up to 12 months to assign it to a vehicle. This can be extended for a further 12 months for a standard DVLA charge of £25.
- Can I put N16 HTF onto a vehicle of any age?
The law is clear on this. You cannot make a vehicle appear newer by assigning a registration of a younger year. N16 HTF can be assigned to a vehicle first registered on or after 1st August 1995. The registration date will be stated on the vehicle's V5 vehicle registration document. Use this date and not the year letter on the vehicle's number plate just in case it is also a personalised number plate.
- If I have my registration number issued on a retention document what do I do when I receive it? Will I have to pay any more money to assign it to a vehicle?
You have up to 12 months to assign the registration number to a vehicle. When you are ready to assign, you can take or post the vehicle’s documents to your local DLVA office and they will handle the transfer process for you. There is no additional cost unless you need to alter any details on the retention document such as the address or nominee name. Please note that you can extend the retention document for an additional 12 months each year for a standard DVLA charge of £25.
- If my vehicle already has a registration number can I transfer it to another vehicle or to retention simultaneously?
Yes, this is possible. It will be necessary to send us the documents for the other vehicle involved and this will cost an additional £80. Alternatively, the redundant registration number may be held on a D.O.T. retention certificate. This will cost an additional £25. For this extra service cheques should be made payable to the DVLA. We won’t charge you anything.
- What happens if I need to tax or MOT my vehicle as N16 HTF is being transferred to it?
This is no problem for us at Plate Master.
- For road tax: Send us the appropriate fee together with the vehicle’s insurance certificate or cover note (cheques payable to DVLA). If you have a tax application form please send this too. Please ensure any new certificate is issued under the current registration and not the one we are supplying you.
- For the MOT certificate: You must ensure that the MOT station issues this certificate under the current registration and not the new one we are supplying you. Send this to us as soon as you can.
We will have all your documents amended for you and won’t charge you for it.
