Celebrity Number Plates - Part Two

AMS 1
Alan Sugar

Ever since the incredibly popular series The Apprentice became a peak time hit, Sir Alan Sugar's private number plate has become familiar to viewers. During the programme's opening sequence AMS 1 can be seen on his Rolls-Royce. The famous entrepreneur has owned the number plate for many years and first had it assigned to his van.

Sugar now has an estimated fortune of £730m and was ranked 59th in the Sunday Times Rich List 2009. Sir Alan is also famously known as the founder of Amstrad, the consumer electronics group formed in 1968, which he has now sold, and was the former chairman of Tottenham Hotspur FC form 1991 to 2001.

Chris Tarrant

"Who wants to be a-ware" of the link between 'Chubb" and the quizmaster Chris Tarrant? We'll give you a lifeline! Or rather a clue! It can be found on the end of another kind of line, a fishing line. Got it? A keen angler, Chris rather fancied a "plate" of his favourite fish, a Chubb! Apparently, flash plates like CT 1 don't appeal to him. Perhaps not the most likely of celebrity number plates, but definitely the most unusual "catch"!

Tarrant is best known as the presenter of the renowned show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? However, he found success prior to this on the radio and with the 70s kids show Tiswas. The lively presenter is also commended for his charity work, for which he received an OBE in 2004. Amongst others, he is the ambassador for Centrepoint, the homeless charity, and the Trustee/Patron of a school for disadvantaged children.

5 TES
Tessa Sanderson

The UK's most triumphant Javelin thrower, Tessa Sanderson, couldn't escape the fascination of personalised number plates as she secured herself a shortened version of her name on a plate. At one point she had it displayed on her Mercedes. However, it was understood that she was looking to sell it.

Tessa has competed in six Olympic games, a record in itself. She won gold medal in the javelin event in 1984. Tessa has won many other major medals including three times Commonwealth Gold and in 1990, the final being World Cup Gold in Cuba. The Olympic champ hasn't run out of energy though and is now involved in charities and sports academies. Her charity work earned her an OBE in 1998 and a CBE for her services to British sport in 2004.

1 ANN
Princess Anne

Another royal treasure was once exhibited on HRH Princess Anne's car. The Princess Royal was bestowed this supreme cherished number plate as a gift on her first wedding. In fact, the Royals are no strangers to private number plates. The late Queen mother owned NLT 2, HRH Prince Philip owns OXR 1, The Duke of Kent owns YR 11 and Princess Margaret used to own 3 GXM.

The patron of over 200 organizations, Anne is well known for her charitable work. She makes about 700 royal engagements and public appearances annually. The only member of the British Royal Family to have competed in the Olympic games, the Princess is also known for equestrian talents winning one gold and two silver medals at the European Eventing Championships.

D12 MOT
K1 GBO
Kriss Akabusi

The former athlete who went on to become a television presenter and motivational speaker, Kriss Akabusi, endowed himself with a collection of personalised plates including the three shown here. The man with the notorious laugh is so proud of his Nigerian roots he bought K1 GBO (K for Kriss and 1GBO for 'Igbo', the name of his tribe). His fun plate D12 MOT represents Dr. Motivator and M12 KDA his initials.

Kriss enjoyed a successful athletics career as a 400M hurdler and as a member of the 4x400M relay team. He won three medals at the Summer Olympics and three World Championship medals, amongst others. The man with charisma has presented television shows Record Breakers and The Big Breakfast, and has regularly appeared as a panelist on many quiz shows including A Question of Sport. In 1992, he was awarded the MBE by the Queen in recognition of his sports services to the country.

JM 1
1 JM
JM 2
John Madejski

Sir John Madejski, the highly successful English businessman certainly has a taste for number plates. Considering the fact that his initials are the second most common in the UK, his collection is enviable and worth a lot more than the cars they are assigned to. 1 JM decorates a Rolls Royce Corniche, JM 1, a Rolls Royce Limousine and JM 2, a Jaguar XJ 220. He also owns cars brandishing JM 19, B1 BYE and TGF 140.

Madejski, the founder of the magazine Auto Trader, has a diverse range of commercial interests, including broadcast media, publishing, hotels, restaurants and property. However, he is perhaps best known as the chairman of Reading Football Club. With a net fortune said to be in the region of £250 million, he is in the top 200 wealthiest people in Britain. He is also a benefactor to many institutions, particularly in the arts, academia and education.
