Classic Name Plates

Increasingly popular are personalised number plates that spell out names, both first name and last, in one way or another. Generally, since there is little geometric difference, the best number plate representations are those where an occurrence of the letter ‘I’ is substituted by the number 1. However, the number 4 makes for a reasonably faithful letter ‘A’ as does the number 5 for the letter ‘S’. Here, we’ll take a look at some of the best of the classics.

• N1 CKY - Nicky’s perfect match was issued in 1995 and is currently available at over £150,000.
• RU55 ELL - was bought by Oxfordshire property developer Russell Harrison at auction for £78,500. Mr Harrison said that he waited for five years for the release of his perfect number plate.
• V1 OLA – A pretty flower, a pretty name and a pretty hefty price at over £40,000. The flower is common these days but this registration mark most definitely is not. If you like gardening, play the viola or are named Viola, here is your perfect plate.
• 1 ANN – The Queen’s daughter, Princess Ann was given this absolute classic as a gift on her first wedding. However, due to security reasons it was eventually removed and returned to the person from whom it came at the end of her first marriage.
• 51 NGH – The well-known classic Asian name ‘Singh’ number plate held the record for the most expensive UK number plate for a while. It sold for a whopping £254,000. The purchasers, who declined to be identified, also successfully procured MR51 NGH at auction for £101,000.

Some other notable classics include S1 MON, CHR 1S, G1 LLY and S4 NDY.
