Those registered before 1st September 2001 can additionally display a number plate at the front but it is not actually necessary.
The number plate characters may be smaller as indicated in this table:
| Character height | 64mm |
| Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) | 44mm |
| Character stroke (thickness) | 10mm |
| Space between characters | 10mm |
| Horizontal space between groups (A12<->ABC) | 30mm |
| Vertical space between groups (two line plates) | 13mm |
| Top, side & bottom margin (minimum) | 11mm |
Motorcycles registered on or after 1st September 2001 must display a two-line number plate whereas ones registered before 1st September 2001 may display a three-line plate. Single line number plates are illegal, irrespective of the vehicle’s registration date.
Tricycles derived from four wheeled bodies (saloon cars) must meet the normal requirements whereas tricycles derived from motorcycles must meet the requirements as specified in this particular section.
