Rules for assigning a private registration number
Main rules for registration number transfers
Essentially, it is illegal to make a vehicle appear younger than it's registered age. You cannot make your vehicle seem younger. For example, you cannot assign a K registered number plate to a vehicle that was first registered in mainland Briton before August 1992. This registered date will be stated on the vehicle's V5 vehicle registration document. Use this date and not the year letter on the vehicle's number plate just in case it is also a personalized registration plate.

Use the table opposite to see which year letter corresponds to a given year. Please also note that only vehicles with a valid MOT certificate (if applicable) and a valid licence disc may use the transfer scheme.
Rules on number plate styles and fonts
  • Vehicles registered September 2001 onwards
  • There are strict laws for registration number plate styles and fonts. For vehicles registered September 2001 and onwards the display characters must be 79mm tall and 50mm wide with a thickness or stroke of 14mm. The inter-character gap is 11mm and the space that divides the two parts of the registration plate is 33mm. The only legal font is known as the "Charles Wright".

Please note that for all vehicles registered after January 1973 that have ALSO HAD NUMBER PLATES CHANGED AFTER SEPTEMBER 2001, the above rule applies. So for example, a 1975 registered vehicle that has had it's number plates changed in 2002 must comply with the above rule.
  • Vehicles registered January 1973 onwards
  • The registration plate characters permitted have two valid sizes. (1) 89mm tall by 64mm wide with 13mm gaps between each character and 38mm between the two parts of the registration number or (2) 79mm tall by 57mm wide with 11mm gaps between characters and 33mm between the two parts of the registration number plate. Generally a plain font must be used - no italics or otherwise are legal. Similarly, these rules apply to number plates FITTED BETWEEN January 1973 and September 2001 and don't relate to the actual year of the vehicle.
  • Vehicles registered before January 1973
  • If your vehicle was registered before 1973, your are permitted to use the old style of registration plates. This is either white or silver characters on a black plate. These are generally embossed characters on metal plates but not restricted to.
  • General
  • In general, it is illegal to misrepresent number plates in any way. This includes doing so with screws and bolts, italic / other fancy fonts, incorrect spacing etc. If you have any concerns please contact the DVLA.
