YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What documents will I need for buying a registration mark? You will need your vehicle registration document (V5), the MOT certificate if applicable and a copy of your tax disc (or a note of the tax expiry date). Alternatively, the registration mark may be held on a Certificate of Entitlement (V750) for up to 12 months before assigning it to a vehicle.

How much is the DOT transfer fee? At the time of going to press, the transfer fee is £80. If the registration mark is to be held on a retention certificate there will be an additional £25.

Do I have to put the registration mark straight onto a vehicle once I have bought it? If it has been supplied on a Certificate of Entitlement (V750) you have until the expiry date shown on this (or V778) to assign it to a vehicle.

What happens to the registration that is currently on my vehicle if I buy a new registration? Normally, the old registration is invalidated by the D.O.T., unless you pay the D.O.T. fee to retain the registration on a retention certificate.

How long will a transfer take? The transfer process can only commence when we receive the required documents. Once received, the entire process typically takes less than 7 working days.

If my registration is issued on retention what do I do when I receive the retention certificate? Within 12 months of the date stamped on the certificate, take the certificate, your vehicle registration document, MOT and tax disc (or a copy of) to your nearest VRO. Alternatively, you can post them to the DVLA in Swansea. Please note there is no additional cost.

Currently, what methods can I pay by? You may pay by Credit card online, Cheque, Bankers Draft or Transfer Credit. You can also deposit cash directly into Plate Master's bank account through any Barclays Bank.

How do I check the progress of my registration transfer? We aim to process your order as quick as we can. Plate Master would appreciate all progress enquiries to be sent by email (sales@platemaster.com) or to be written to Plate Master Ltd., Columbia House, 32 Bantock Close, Browns Wood, Milton Keynes. MK7 8DS. You may otherwise call us on 01908 640483.

What restrictions apply to the transfer of a registration mark? It is illegal to make a vehicle appear younger than it is by assigning a registration mark. For example, you cannot assign a registration mark prefixed with N to an M registered vehicle. You may, however, do the opposite, i.e., assign an M prefixed registration mark to an N registered vehicle.

If the recipient vehicle has a registration mark currently on it, can that mark be transferred to another vehicle or to retention simultaneously?Yes it can. Known as a double transfer, it will be necessary to send us the documents for the other vehicle involved. You will need to send us an additional £80, the standard transfer fee. Alternatively, the redundant registration mark my be held on a D.O.T. retention certificate. This will cost an additional £25.

Once my registration mark has been sold do I get another one free of charge? Yes. The DVLA will issue your vehicle with a replacement registration mark appropriate to the age of the vehicle. This will not cost you anything.
