Private number plates for sale from Plate Master

What are private number plates?

Private number plates are compelling replacements for the standard issue DVLA registration numbers which have been applied to a vehicle. The terms cherished number plates and personalised number plates are often used to describe the same thing. You will also find that "registration" is frequently used interchangeably with "number plate".

They're sought after for a variety of reasons - to celebrate something personal such as a name, initials, occupation, favourite dog breed, football team etc. Perhaps as an investment - old plates or plates with rare letter and number combinations can carry significant value, or simply to disguise the age of a vehicle.

You can transfer a private plate from one vehicle to another, from a vehicle to a certificate, or from a certificate onto a vehicle. In most cases this can be done online, simply requiring some basic information from the vehicle(s) and/or certificate involved. The DVLA will then provide you with relevant updated paperwork (such as a new V5 logboook for any cars you have put a plate onto/taken a plate off), also handling the update of any relevant tax/MOT records. The final step you will have to perform is contacting your insurance company to let them know of the change of plate on any involved vehicles.
Absolutely, yes! They make great unique gifts for all sorts of occasions. All you need to know is how their name appears on their V5 logbook, then supply that when you're buying and the registration will be issued in their name, allowing them to pair it up with their vehicle.
When you assign a registration to your vehicle, your existing registration will be "overwritten". In future, should you take the registration off your car, it typically gets the previous registration back - but this is not guaranteed. If you have a private number plate on your car currently, you should first apply to transfer it to another vehicle or certificate to prevent any chance of it being lost.
