Number plates fitted after 1st September 2001

Number plates fitted to vehicles on or after 1st September 2001 must display characters that comply with the dimensions in the table below:

Note that for all vehicles registered on or after 1st January 1973 that have subsequently had number plates fitted on or after 1st September 2001, the above applies. So for example, a 1976 registered vehicle that has had its number plates changed in 2003 must comply with the above specifications.

Note that to accommodate the Euro-symbol on the number plate, the character width has been slightly reduced from 57mm to 50mm.
