Motorcycles and Tricycles

There are separate provisions for motorcycles and tricycles. Such vehicles registered on or after 1st September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle. Those registered before 1st September 2001 can additionally display a number plate at the front but it is not actually necessary.

The number plate characters may be smaller as indicated in this table:

Space between characters 10mm
Horizontal space between groups (A12<->ABC) 30mm
Vertical space between groups (two line plates) 13mm
Top, side & bottom margin (minimum) 11mm

Motorcycles registered on or after 1st September 2001 must display a two-line number plate whereas ones registered before 1st September 2001 may display a three-line plate. Single line number plates are illegal, irrespective of the vehicle's registration date.

Tricycles derived from four wheeled bodies (saloon cars) must meet the normal requirements whereas tricycles derived from motorcycles must meet the requirements as specified in this particular section.
